Purchasing the Hindenburg pretty much broke me for awhile and I was back to playing my premium ships and mid tiers to earn cash. I used some free xp to research up through to the Kirov in the Soviet line, but I don't have the cash in game to purchase other ships at the moment. I'm working through the IJN cruiser line now (Myoko is pretty awesome). I've made it through to the Baltimore for the USN line. The USN line's AA used to be the best (and perhaps only) reason to play the line, but since the balancing I'd argue that there is little motivation to go down the full line past tier 6 as the Pensacola and New Orleans aren't great ships. In fact I'd say that the KM line rivals the AA on the USN line since the lines were balanced. Regarding the USN line being cited by some in this thread for their AA, in all reality the AA between the lines is not overly different IMO. If you want a ship line to play for the challenge because they're pretty mediocre, play either USN CVs or Cruisers. The only ship line doing worse than USN Cruisers are USN CVs, and those are getting curbstomped by their IJN counterparts up and down every single tier by a landslide. The other wonderful trait that USN Cruisers feature is that they generally are, tier for tier, the worst performing, mediocre Cruisers in the game. Tier V and below, USN Cruisers have poor AA like everyone else. Note that these Cruisers lack the 127mm dual gun turrets that are present in the first group of USN Cruisers. Tier VII Pensacola, Tier VII Premium Indianapolis, Tier VIII New Orleans have good short ranged AA. You can include Tier VIII-X USN BBs, because their long range AA proficiency is due to these same turrets. Take a look at these listed ships in port, they have them and excel at long range AA. The one that really starts turning the screws for CV players are the long range AA and for the USN, that is always done with the 127mm dual gun turrets. Their layers of AA capability run the full spectrum. These USN Cruisers have excellent short, medium, but most importantly, long range AA. Tier IX Baltimore (easily the worst, bottom feeding Tier IX Cruiser) USN Cruisers? Good AA? Only very specific ones:
